They battled fellow Battle Bowl final team Train Wreck all day, playfully chirping at each other (bowlers and supporters alike) throughout a close season finale. But boosted by a score of 300 inside of a 746 series from eventual MVP Dakwan Tyler, SBC proved to be too much.

After a final spare pickup that was a formality by that point, the crowd erupts, a dozen-plus members of SBC crowd onto the lane to celebrate, and the 15th annual Battle Bowl wraps up with a new squad taking home the 2024 Wilder Cup and just another year changing the game and growing the sport for the Underground Bowling Association (UBA).

The UBA isn't your typical bowling organization—it's a high-energy, competition-driven entertainment platform that transforms traditional bowling into an electrifying experience. Think fierce rivalries, team personas, and show-stopping events that draw in serious bowlers and passionate spectators. "The UBA is not a league because that's a particular mentality," said president and owner Philip Chance.
"We're an association, a bowling entertainment platform. Our lingo is different; our dress is different. We're all about that high energy, that camaraderie, and creating a highway for bowlers into something completely new."

More WWE than PBA, the Underground Bowling Association is a group all its own—and it is winning because of it. It embraces the edgy and fun, encouraging trash talk and building different challenges into the rules' structure. The result isn't just a fresh and original take on bowling—it's a competitive environment that mirrors the energy, camaraderie, and culture of the players who form its teams.

By sheer numbers, bowler participation, and community support, the UBA is an impressive success story. Doubly so in an environment where many centers have struggled with dwindling league participants while also facing growing competition for customer attention and dollars. And as the UBA looks to continue expanding, they're offering an incredible opportunity to proprietors wanting to tap into new audiences and revenue streams as franchise owners.

In 2024, the UBA ran more than 400 events across 13 states. They boast over 230 active franchisees and thousands of members in an association that started with just 16 guys in 2009. Over 3,000 people showed up for the end-of-season showdown this past August alone. Their calendar fills nearly a year's worth of a season, with teams traveling throughout their regional footprints and joining up at bigger, marquee-style matches. They've built a strong word-of-mouth following, which they continue to grow through social media, while also fueling team spirit by marketing and selling coveted team merchandise.

"We focus on the culture of bowling," said Chance. "The events generate a lot of engagement because the focus is on the personalities involved and the energy happening behind the lanes. It's why we encourage the callouts and the trash-talking. It's like the NBA; why can't we treat lanes as arenas?"

This smooth-running machine and an ever-growing slate of events overseen by Chance and CEO/co-founder Tynell Tate have injected new life into a host of alleys since its inception. Mainly (and initially) an east coast operation, the UBA now sports five conferences from the Atlantic to the Southwest, and they have eyes on continuing to stretch across the country with a growth plan catered primarily to the business models and needs of bowling center operators.

For a modest startup fee and an even smaller renewal cost, proprietors can become UBA franchise owners, unlocking excitement and revenue. As a team owner, you'll build your roster, create a standout team identity, and showcase your center as a hub for UBA action. You'll expand your social media presence, attract new customers, and host high-energy events that drive serious profits. Hundreds of centers have already seen that the ROI far exceeds the buy-in.

Jeff Benson, general manager of Bowlerama Entertainment Complex in New Castle, DE, describes his partnership with UBA as a perfect fit for their family entertainment center. From callout matches to major events like the NE Unholy and Battle Bowl, hosting UBA competitions has brought positive results for both the center and its bowlers.

John Clotworthy from Westbrook Lanes Family Bowling Center in Brooklawn, NJ, concurs. "I have been absolutely in love with the UBA business. The tournament directors are great and easy to work with; they are on time, very respectful, and awesome. The bowlers are the best. Aside from the revenue from bowling, the bar sales are crazy. My bartenders line up for these shifts. We LOVE this partnership!"

Beyond the pride of being a franchise operator, the benefits roll in from event-hosting fees, food and beverage sales, and the chance to market to new crowds all season long. As cited repeatedly in testimonials, too, is how turnkey everything is, and everything is run on the UBA side. Teams come in prepaid and prepared; everyone knows where to go and what they're doing, and the spirit of the association fills up every center.

Longtime industry marketer and former proprietor Andy Vasko recently attended a UBA event in Columbia, SC, and was blown away by the experience. "The efficiency was unreal—since fees were prepaid and lane assignments were set in advance, every shift started on time, even with 38 lanes packed with bowlers. The energy was off the charts, with players and spectators feeding off excitement. People even had tripods set up, capturing every moment." So impressed by what he saw, Vasko has become a center liaison for the UBA, helping center franchisees make the most of their partnership and tap into the growing momentum of this high-energy bowling movement.

The real excitement of the UBA isn't just in the tour stops—it's in the nonstop action that keeps bowlers engaged all season long. While teams battle it out in a 10-month stretch to rack up points and earn
a spot in the nationwide tournament, the format keeps things fresh. Each team has a roster of dozens, but only nine players hit the lanes per stop, splitting into three-bowler squads for a mix of scratch and handicap matches. Every win and every pin knocked down add up, with the highest-ranking teams earning their shot at the postseason.

But if you want to shake things up, there's always the thrill of a callout. Sitting in the #3 to #5 spot? Call out the #2 team, take them down, and jump ahead in the rankings—bonus points and bragging rights included. And if you really want to make a statement, you can take a belt from a rival, adding some serious WWE-style drama to the mix.

Beyond the regular season, UBA managers keep the energy high with regional events, tailoring competitions to bowler demand and ensuring there's always another big matchup on the horizon.

Overall, the UBA represents a fundamental need to shake up the industry and open more avenues to new customers and excitement about the sport. It's not a teardown of what came before but a bridge to something extra designed with the bowlers themselves (and the centers who represent their franchises) in mind.

If you want to hear more or inquire about becoming a team owner in this growing association, visit www.undergroundbowling.com or contact Andy Vasko at 239-269-8385.

Revenue

Tue, 01 Apr 2025 16:00:00 +0000 Ryan Vasko 356 at https://bowlingindustry.com https://bowlingindustry.com/defying-the-trend#comments Socializing Your Way to Profits https://bowlingindustry.com/socialize-your-way-to-profits Socializing Your Way to Profits Andy Vasko Tue, 04/01/2025 - 12:00

A few years back an operator of a chain of well-run, up-to-date, and busy centers called me with a dynamite suggestion. He said there was a lady in his center having great success building new leagues from scratch for him. She was not an employee but was one of his dedicated league bowlers. He was excited to report to me that she had recently formed numerous adult leagues of 4-to-a-team, filling 24 teams once, 32 teams the next time, and that she already had 28 teams ready to go for her next league, plus she had six full teams on her waiting list! I was anxious to find out how this super salesperson was able to do this and share it with other operators, who might use the information to fill some holes they had in their schedules.

Takeaway #1: It doesn’t take a marketing or sales type person to get results, you can get good results simply by using someone who wants to introduce the fun of league bowling to others!

I gave her a call, and when she answered, she came across as very mild-mannered and quiet; in no way did I take her to be a "sales type" of person. I asked her what sales techniques she was using to convince all these people, who were mostly new to league play, to sign up for her Pizza, Beverage, & Bowling 16-week leagues. She politely told me that was not a salesperson type at all, she just liked bowling and offering others the fun of league bowling. She found it was very easy to get people to join her leagues by simply explaining all the fun that was involved. When I told her she was an amazing ‘social seller,’ she responded that she prefers the name Social Butterfly.

WHERE DID SHE FIND THE PEOPLE?

The prospects were easy to find, they were already at the center open bowling during the center’s busy times. All the Social Butterfly did was walk through the open play traffic and talk with customers about how fun it is being a part of one of her leagues. It’s important to note that her leagues were priced at $18 per week per bowler, which was more than the amount that the center management thought she should ask for. She presented her league to people about 6 to 8 hours a week and most often filled a league in a week or two. Of course, she found people who brought friends and family to the league because she asked interested people to get friends and family members together and join.

Takeaway #2: This technique is relatively easy, the cost is low, and you’re only spending a concentrated effort on people who have already shown an interset in bowling and/or liking your establishment. When soliciting customers in-house you may have to ask a lot to get a few, but overall, a well worth it endeavor!

YOUR SOCIAL BUTTERFLY

I encourage you to find your own Social Butterfly to talk with customers about joining a special hole-filling league you are offering. Find someone who enjoys league bowling (maybe a current league customer) and ask them to "work" a couple of hours a night during your busy open playtimes. Give him or her some flyers and a clipboard and let them be social. This approach is low risk with a possible high reward. The marketing targets are already in your center, so the difficult and expensive marketing work is done. Be sure to make good use of your monitors, broadcast over the PA, display cards and flyers including around the center and bar, and consider making a QR code for more information.

Revenue

Tue, 01 Apr 2025 16:00:00 +0000 Andy Vasko 354 at https://bowlingindustry.com https://bowlingindustry.com/socialize-your-way-to-profits#comments The 10 Popular and Most Profitable Bar Foods and Menu Items https://bowlingindustry.com/10-popular-and-profitable-bar-foods The 10 Popular and Most Profitable Bar Foods and Menu Items Toast Payment … Mon, 03/03/2025 - 12:00

As the busy season for bars and restaurants approaches, owners and managers are always on the lookout for ways to increase their profits.

One effective strategy is offering popular and profitable bar foods that keep customers returning for more.

According to Ginger Hultin, a registered dietitian, “people will consume more [food] at meals when they’re including alcohol…”. However, analyzing your current offerings can help you improve your menu and ensure it’s a moneymaker.

Analyzing your current menu

The first step in making your bar menu a moneymaker is to analyze your current menu. This process is called menu engineering. You should consider implementing this process at least twice a year.

You’re going to want to measure the profitability and popularity of each of your menu items. This can be accomplished through calculations such as food cost percentage, contribution margin, and frequency of sales.

You can also implement restaurant technology to keep a quick menu analysis always at your fingertips. For example, reporting and dashboards within xtraCHEF by Toast can provide a real-time barometer of menu health based on the most recent food costs.

You can break your menu items into the following 4 categories:

1. Stars

Stars are the category most of your bar food menu should fall. Your stars are high profitability with high popularity. It doesn’t cost too much to make them and yet they sell often.

2. Puzzles

This category is appropriately named; puzzles are difficult to solve. These are the items with high profitability but low popularity. Although selling one makes your restaurant a good profit, they don’t sell too often. These items are touchy because ordering the right ingredients for them can be a waste. However, if you get your staff to focus on upselling guests these items can increase in profitability.

3. Plowhorses

Plowhorses have low profitability and high popularity. You don’t make a large profit off of them individually, but they sell often enough to usually make up for it. These items attract your guests to your business in the first place, so you usually don’t want to remove them from your menu.

4. Dogs

This is the category you should most likely avoid. Dogs are low profitability with low popularity. Chips and Dip

Chips and dip are one of the easiest items to prepare, and they could be whatever suits your bar the most. You could serve salsa, guacamole, queso, spinach and artichoke dip, etc. Chips and dip are also popular food items for groups of people who want to share a snack while enjoying drinks.

2. Pizza

Pizza is almost a no-brainer because it’s such a highly popular menu item. Pizza also has a relatively low cost of ingredients compared to the menu price, which means it has a high-profit margin for bars. Pizza is versatile and can usually be customized, and it pairs well with alcoholic beverages such as beer and wine.

3. French Fries and Onion Rings

Next, we have french fries and onion rings. These can be purchased frozen at a low cost and sold with different dipping sauces at a higher price. Everyone loves a basket of fried snacks, and these 2 rarely fail. Fries and onion rings can also be listed as additional sides that consumers can order to make your bar some extra profit.

4. Burgers

Did you know about 3 out of 5 consumers love burgers on the menu? Having a classic burger on your menu is a smart move because of its popularity, versatility, and high-profit margin.

5. Chicken Wings and Tenders

Wings and chicken tenders have always been bar food staples. They’re easy to prepare and have a high demand. But have you considered how late you should be serving them?

Lincoln Tavern in South Boston starts offering their wings starting at 9 am on the weekends with brunch and keeps ‘em cooking until 1 am in their pizza oven. Nachos

There’s something about a large plate of nachos at a bar that just makes sense. And when it comes to high profit, this dish is most certainly nacho problem.

Nachos are made up of cheap, simple ingredients: chips, cheese, sour cream, jalapenos, olives…etc. You can upcharge customers for guacamole or protein. Mozzarella Sticks

Mike Kostyo, a “trendologist” at Datassential, notes that 85% of American consumers say they either “love” or “like” mozzarella cheese. Similar to french fries and onion rings, you can buy mozzarella sticks frozen, toss them in the fryer, and serve them with a side of marinara sauce. Also, the portion size of mozzarella sticks is often small, making them an ideal appetizer that can be shared among a group of people. This means that more orders can be placed, which increases revenue for your bar.

8. Salads

Salads are a great option for your health-conscious customers. It doesn’t cost a lot to have a few salads on the menu and they can change with the seasons to keep produce costs low. Salads are also commonly the only menu item available for different dietary restrictions. Consider adding a Greek or a caesar to your bar menu today!

Zipps Sports Grill is more commonly known for its chicken tenders and wings, so they made use of the ingredients they already purchase to make a buffalo chicken salad.

9. Pretzels

Soft pretzels are another popular menu item at bars, and there are several reasons why they can be profitable. First, soft pretzels are relatively inexpensive to make and can be made in bulk. Second, soft pretzels are a versatile menu item that can be served with a variety of dips or toppings. This means that they can appeal to a wide range of customers with different tastes. Lastly, soft pretzels also pair well with a variety of drinks, such as beer. This makes them an ideal appetizer to order at a bar.

10. Quesadillas

Quesadillas use some of the same ingredients as nachos and chips and dip. If you feature all of these items on your bar menu you are purchasing ingredients that serve different purposes – this is good to keep inventory efficient. Quesadillas also paid well with cocktails such as margaritas, and make for a tasty snack during a late night.

Revenue

Mon, 03 Mar 2025 17:00:00 +0000 Toast Payment Processing 351 at https://bowlingindustry.com A Dive into the Profitability of Arcades https://bowlingindustry.com/profitability-of-arcades A Dive into the Profitability of Arcades

Are arcades profitable? How you decide to align your own business will depend on how much of the daily operations and initial investment you want to take on.

Pros of owning your own equipment:

You get to choose the game selection.

You get to keep 100% of the profits.

Pros of using a route operator:

They are responsible for the initial investment.

Operators can often rotate games between locations to give your customers new games/variety.

They are responsible for the ongoing maintenance and game repair.

The Crucial Role of Maintenance and Repairs

Speaking of game repair, as with everything now, the old adage “They just don’t make things like they used to” also goes for autos, homes, and games. Even brand-new games will break. These games are costly and take a beating. Daily use often abuses computers, screens, buttons, switches, and mechanical parts. The good thing is often, that means you are busy and making money, but it also means that you need to be able to repair your games and do it quickly. Think of it like a car (some games also have similar price tags). It won’t last long if you don’t change the oil and perform ongoing maintenance on your vehicle.

If, by luck, it does last, the resale/trade-in value will be highly diminished by your lack of maintenance. Even a brand-new car can have issues right off the lot. Your games are the same way. You either need to be able to repair and maintain your games, hire a mechanic (aka game tech) to do it for you or find an operator who will do it for you instead of a portion of your profits. This is simply a cost of doing business, and you need to budget and account for it. Technical schools like Betson Technical University can teach you or your team how to fix and maintain games if you decide you want to take on that responsibility.

You can’t change the oil in your car unless you have tools and oil. To operate an arcade, you will need essential tools to start and back up parts. Any manufacturer or distributor can tell you the most commonly ordered parts of each game, and you can keep some of those parts in stock. A well-stocked parts and tech area in your location will save you thousands in shipping and operational costs. A broken game makes zero revenue per hour and zero revenue per day that it’s broken.

Most arcades make the majority of their money on weekends and holidays. Suppose your game is making an average of $250 per week, and you need a $50 part to get the game operational, and it will cost you $50 to overnight the part. In that case, you can likely fix the game and still salvage most of your revenue if you can get it operational before the weekend. Does anyone really WANT to pay overnight shipping charges? Heck NO! This is why proper planning and back-up part stocking can save you tons of money overall. The game will get operational quicker with in-stock parts, and you will save the expedited shipping cost. That said, most of the time, if you are aware of your revenue numbers, you will see that the cost of expediting that part, 9 out of 10 times, is worth it.

Game Selection: Using Data Over Desire

Okay, so you have decided you want to own your own games and take on the repair and maintenance that goes along with it. You will plan ahead, be well-stocked on parts and tools, and hire or train a game tech at your facility. Now what? What games do you choose? How do you decide what games to pick? Do you let your kids pick? Do you pick what you like and think is fun?

Let me digress and tell you a quick story….When I owned my own facility, I loved going to trade shows and playing all the new games (truth be told, I still love that!). But I would go to my distributor rep (who I now get the privilege to work with), and I would tell him that I just played the most amazing game, and it was so much fun, and I just HAD to have it! And he would do his best to talk me out of it if it wasn’t a good-earning game. If you get a chance at the next show, ask him or me about this game I just had to have, and he will remember the fight I put up about it. Some of these games actually never even made it to market. I quickly learned that I had to use the data to make these decisions, not my instincts or what my kids thought was fun.

For most people, this is an investment. Something that they want to be profitable. Sometimes, the most profitable games will make you scratch your head regarding what YOU think is fun. I can’t tell you how many times I hear from people asking about the “classics” and “retro” games. You can make some scenarios work for you, but in most scenarios, these games belong in your basement or man cave, not your profit center. When choosing who to buy games from, find someone who will be honest with you about games and their profitability and tell you things you may not want to hear. And listen.

Analyzing Game Types: Redemption, Video, and Merchandisers

Now you have your most important person, your game tech, their parts, and their tools, and an honest games distributor rep who will guide you to the right, profitable games. Let’s talk game mix. When talking about games, we generalize into three main categories, each with some subcategories. The main three categories are

Redemption games—In these games, you can win tickets (paper or electronic) that you can then redeem later for prizes.

Subcategories include pushers, large wheel-type games, ring/ticket cranes, sports games, carnival/skill wall games, and multi-player games.

Video games—These are longer-playing games that are played just for fun. You don’t win anything other than high scores and bragging rights.

Subcategories include VR games, motion drivers and games, non-motion games, shooters, environmental cabinets, dance games, and bar games.

Merchandisers – These are games that you physically win or get something from directly.

Subcategories include Crane/Claw Games, String Cutting games, Win Every Time (candy/duck cranes), Photo Booths, etc.

Maximizing ROI: Game Mix and Strategic Planning

Now, let’s start talking about Return on Investment (ROI). Not every location will be the same. Your game selection and how you price your games, ticket payouts, etc., will depend on your market. Who is your primary audience? (Please don’t say 2 years old to 99). Of course, you will likely have people of all ages visit your facility, but you must build it with a specific age group in mind. Adults will not go on a date night to a kiddie facility. Teens and young adults don’t want to hang out with 8-year-olds. Your games, attraction choices, food selection, lighting, sound, and pricing will all be driven by this specific vision of this one primary, specific market. We also need to know if you are working primarily with repeat business in a small local market or a large tourist market that is unlikely to have a lot of repeat business.

Let’s talk about the game mix. Your merchandisers will tend to have the shortest ROI. They tend to be less expensive upfront and usually make good revenue. The next best earning category would be redemption games, with video bringing up the rear regarding ROI. Obviously, there are exceptions, but I am speaking in some generalities for now. Generally speaking, we like to aim for about 60-70% of your game room as redemption-style games, 20-30% as video games, and 10-15% as Merchandisers and Cranes.

Why put in Video Games if they are the lowest earners with the lowest ROI? There is more to operating a game room than just a quick ROI. Your customers must feel like they also got a good value or won’t return. Most arcades depend on return business to stay profitable. If I give my child $20 and they blow through it in 10 minutes with nothing to show for it, I am unlikely to return. So, in the mix, the quick ROI on the merchandisers balances out the longer ROI on the video games. And the longer play value of the video games balances out the shorter play value of the merchandisers. Your game mix and the value the customers feel will directly affect your profitability.

Next, we need to discuss redemption. Besides games, toys are my next favorite part of this industry. In my FEC, I wouldn’t allow my employees to open the redemption boxes until I arrived, as it was like Christmas every week. Again, this part of the business goes towards the value the customer feels and their likelihood to return. You can adjust two metrics to affect this part of the business and how guests feel about it. One is the price per game versus the amount of redemption tickets earned. This is your game room payout. In general, we would like to see this at around 30%. So, for every $1 earned, you will give .30 worth of tickets. If the game costs less, it gives out fewer tickets. If it costs more, it gives out more tickets.

Some subcategories of games will give out different percentages. We aim for 10-15% on skill wall-type games. These are games that are fun to play, with or without tickets. They usually have a longer play value in terms of length of play. These are alley rollers, basketballs, etc. In the 20-25% payout range, we see games with a decent play value but are generally more for redemption tickets. And in the 30-40% range, we see the quick games. These are wheels and things that typically involve a single spin or button, and the game is over quickly. These generally should have the highest ticket payout.

The 2nd metric is your redemption prize markup. This is how much you mark up your prizes. In the above example, if the customer brings you those .30 worth of tickets, what is the value of the item they can buy with that. If you did a 2x markup in your redemption, they would buy a .15 item. So, in this example, your overall cost of goods sold is around 15%. You can choose to have a standard markup throughout your redemption counter, or you can have it graduated, with a higher markup for cheaper items and less for high-end items.

Lifecycle Management: When to Update Your Arcade Collection

Now you have your game tech, parts package, chosen the right games, with the right mix, with the right payout, with the right prizes, and the right markup. Just sit back and collect the money, right? NO! Again, these games are like cars. After a certain mileage and age, they will start to lose value. Not all games are created equal. There are a couple dozen basketball games on the market right now. The purchase price will not be the same for them. The amount of revenue they make will vary widely. The amount of maintenance they require will vary widely. And the amount of trade-in value or resale value will vary widely.

These are just some generalized scenarios to show that sometimes the initial cost of the game doesn’t correlate to your profit margin in the end. Choose known earning games from reputable companies that stand behind their games and will maintain a resale or trade-in value. These games will make you the most money, cost you the least in ongoing costs, and give you a little on the back end to roll into a new game. Every couple of years, you will want to consider trading in/upgrading your bottom 10-15% of earning games for new games to keep your game room fresh and earning well and maximize game trade-in value.

How do you know which games your lowest earners are and what to trade in? You will also want to consider a game card system when you purchase your games. It will not only earn you more money toward your bottom-line profitability and offer you flexibility in pricing and promotional structures you wouldn’t be able to do otherwise, but it will also give you the ability to see and analyze your data and make informed decisions.

The Dynamic Arcade Industry: Staying Ahead of the Curve

In this ever-changing industry, with new games and products coming out every year, this industry will allow you to evolve and grow continually with time. It’s not a stagnant, “set it and forget it” business. It can be very profitable and lucrative, with ROIs for games ranging from a couple of weeks to a couple of years. Even the longer ROIs are still a great investment and return compared to most industries. Make sure you do your homework and make investments based on data, not emotion. In conclusion, arcade games have repeatedly shown that they are not just about entertainment but also about generating smiles and revenue for those who dare to press ‘start.’

Revenue

Mon, 03 Jun 2024 16:00:00 +0000 Betson Enterprises 326 at https://bowlingindustry.com Maximizing Profits in the Modern Arcade Era https://bowlingindustry.com/maximizing-profits-modern-arcade-era Maximizing Profits in the Modern Arcade Era

Discover how you maximize profits and stay relevant in the modern gaming era.

Party Center S… Wed, 05/01/2024 - I sure hadn’t, until I started to research the FEC at the Ibn Battuta Mall in Dubai. Ibn Battuta was a 14th-century Moroccan Muslim traveler and adventurer (1304-1369) who explored the Dar al-Salam, or the Lands of Islam. At that time, Islam had spread to some of the farthest corners of the world, from Africa to India to China and beyond. Ibn Battuta, the son of a wealthy legal scholar, was a smart and clever man who traveled the world, working as an itinerant judge to subsidize his exploration. Ibn Battuta wrote one of the earliest and most influential travel logs. Thus, the Ibn Battuta Mall in Dubai pays homage to this great Muslim explorer and recorder of the world.

The mall commemorates the six regions that Ibn Battuta visited during his life through architectural renderings: Egypt, Persia, India, China, Tunisia, and Andalusia. The courts are designed to reflect the architecture and cultural achievements unique to each region. The mall is home to over 275 high-end, luxury brand shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues.

One of the main attractions in the court of India is the Dubai Switch Bowling Center, which houses 12 lanes, a six-table billiards room, three private karaoke rooms, and a 150-seat restaurant called Alpy’s serving a wide variety of menu items from six different nations.

In keeping with the mall's theme, the bowling center, which opened its doors in August of 2010, is decidedly upscale in design, décor, fixtures, fittings, and furnishings. It’s designed to impress, and has the “WOW!” factor. Shareef Al Halawani, head of the Board of Directors and owner of the mall, is marketing-driven and thrives on providing dynamite customer service, which boosts guest return visits. While most of the promotions that Shareef has in place will be familiar to proprietors of multi-attraction entertainment centers, the
standout is Shareef’s approach to corporate parties.

Corporate Party Business is Hot

Shareef’s success in marketing and hosting corporate team-building events is impressive. The center typically hosts ten corporate events a month with an average of 72 attendees. That’s 720 a month or 8,640 attendees a year.

Shareef utilizes most forms of marketing for his businesses: a website, social media, bulk emails, telemarketing, outside sales calls, and in-house promotions.

Shareef explains the most effective marketing tools for their corporate sales combine a mix of outside sales calls, telemarketing, and direct mail advertising. The direct mailing includes a custom cover letter to the corporations and a telephone call from an in-house sales professional a few days later. What Shareef clearly understands is the importance of doing your homework before initiating contact by learning about the target corporation's business and identifying the proper connection, ideally the decision maker so you are not relying on a company employee to pitch the sale to their boss on your behalf.

Guests are offered two corporate packages which can be modified and customized to meet any specific needs or requests. A Gold Package includes two hours of bowling for up to six people on each lane and a wide selection of dishes from their menu. They can also add equipment such as wide screens, wireless microphones, and a sound system for audiovisual presentations for an additional fee. The second package, Silver, is similar, with a minor adjustment to the menu offerings.

The Gold Package costs $44 per person on weekdays and $51 on weekends. The Silver Package is $32 on weekdays and $40 on weekends. All packages can be upgraded to include billiards and karaoke.

Karaoke Rooms

Another popular attraction is the center's three private and soundproofed karaoke rooms outfitted with the latest equipment. Located on the mezzanine floor, the rooms are smartly furnished and are perfect for small groups of five or six people. Given that the rooms and occupancy are so tiny, karaoke represents 5% of the overall business based on the charge per person.

Food and beverage service on the lanes, at the billiard tables, and in the karaoke rooms keeps the added attractions financially viable since food and beverage are not included in the base price.

On a percentage basis, bowling represents 50% of the business. Food and beverage sales are 35%, billiards is 10%, and karaoke 5%. Compared to many FECs in other international markets, the percentage of food and beverage sales is on the low side; due to its being alcohol-free status.

Shareef holds a licensing agreement for the use of the Switch name. Alain Winterhalter, the chairman of Switch, says, "Switch helped in the original development of this state-of-the-art center and has maintained a close working relationship with the owner, Shareef Al Halawani.”

Given the longevity of Shareef and his team in the United Arab Emirates, there's no doubt they have a winning formula and will continue to offer their guests the dynamite service experience they are famous for in the unique and modern bn Battuta Mall.

Revenue

Thu, 01 Jun 2023 16:00:00 +0000 Paul Lane 257 at https://bowlingindustry.com The Benefits of a Micro Market https://bowlingindustry.com/the-benefits-of-a-micro-market The Benefits of a Micro Market AVS Companies Thu, 06/01/2023 - 12:00

Micro markets have been growing in popularity in recent years, and I think it’s safe to safe to say that they are here to stay. In case you don’t know what a micro market is, it’s essentially an unattended retail store—you have most likely seen them in businesses, hotels, or airports as a way to cut down on labor costs and offer more convenience and choice to customers.

Recently, micro markets have been getting placed in more and more businesses for employees to utilize. One of the big benefits of a micro market is the ability to increase your number of selections and up the quality of the product. This is due to coolers and freezers being used instead of vending machines, they allow the operator to provide options like fresh fruit, cold wraps, and things like smoothies and yogurt. Basically, all the food that an employee would most likely want on their break is now available in their building and they no longer need to leave the office. With more people staying in the office for breaks, the micro market becomes a space for employees to gather and helps to promote their wellness.

One of the big concerns I have seen when it comes to micro markets is the opportunity for theft. However, technology is advancing so quickly that there are now multiple different options to protect yourself. Coolers have smart locks that do not open until the product is purchased, there is weighted shelf technology to know exactly what a customer is taking, and of course, camera systems are highly recommended. A lot of people have had success with setting up cameras and monitors in the market, so customers know that they are being recorded. Also, if your micro market is placed inside of a business, talk to the owners and make sure that they are willing to hold their employees accountable as well—most people prefer their job over a free bag of Skittles!

Overall, micro markets offer easy access and convenience to customers and operators. With touch-free payment systems, operators are able to check on their market from a phone or computer and customers can pay with the click of a button. Personally, I am much more likely to use a micro market over a vending machine, the selection is always better, and I don’t run the risk of my snack getting stuck in a machine. Obviously, not every location is meant for a micro market, but if you have the capacity and the business to support it, then it’s definitely worth checking out your options.

To see the micro market equipment that AVS Companies offers, click here.

Revenue

Thu, 01 Jun 2023 16:00:00 +0000 AVS Companies 253 at https://bowlingindustry.com Why and How to Host a Stern Army Event https://bowlingindustry.com/host-a-stern-army-event Why and How to Host a Stern Army Event Betson Enterprises Mon, 05/01/2023 - 12:00

Pinball machines have been around since the 1930s, reaching their greatest popularity in the ’80s and ’90s, interest lagged in the early 2000s after those heights. You’ve probably seen many stories regarding the game’s resurgence over the last couple of years. Pinball continues to be red hot. The International Flipper Pinball Association (IFPA) keeps track of tournaments worldwide. The total number of IFPA-sanctioned events for 2022 was 8.366, with total player attendance at those events being 188,308, up 8% from 2019. In addition, the number of unique players that played in an IFPA-sanctioned tournament during 2022 was 24,772, up 1.5% from the number of active players in 2019. They also have more than 73,000 players registered on their website.

While the object of every pinball machine is the same – score the highest points and keep the ball rolling for as long as possible, every cabinet is unique. Each one features different graphics, twists, and turns based on the theme – whether it’s your favorite movie, TV show, or band.

Adding pinball machines to your location is a sound decision because of the popularity and great titles now available. One of the things you might not be thinking about is how you can tap into that passion with the help of the largest manufacturer in the business and advocate for the game. When it comes to long-term success, it takes true business acumen to be creative and adapt accordingly in the face of market instability. The COVID-19 pandemic tested the abilities of business owners around the world to not only succeed but to survive.

Huikko’s Bowling Center in Buffalo, MN, has shown that its unrelenting entrepreneurial spirit is tougher when times are tough. Huikko’s adapted and took control by filling a niche most business owners would never consider: hosting funeral luncheons and celebrations of life for families of their community.

We got in contact with Les Huikko, owner of Huikko’s Bowling Center, to see how this opportunity came to fruition and maybe steal some tips out of his business playbook.

Les started with how he got the ball rolling: “We were first approached by the Catholic church in town to cater a few meals in their basement. We then became their preferred method for all luncheons before COVID-19 hit in 2020. Father would meet with the families and give them our menu to select their meals. We would prepare the meals and deliver them to the church for the church ladies to serve.”

He mentions they started doing funerals on occasion after building an event center back in 2007, but things really took off once the church no longer hosted luncheons in the basement during the pandemic in 2020.

This innovative proprietor wanted to find out exactly how popular this additional stream of revenue could be. “In 2021 we catered/hosted 33 luncheons. Some were just sandwiches and salads to the funeral home. However, most were at our event center due to social distancing requirements. We did $50,000 in luncheons last year, and $80,000 by September of this year. This income is mostly seen as last-minute events filling empty space during weekday lunchtime.” There were minimal losses in the existing revenue.

To keep the additional revenue coming in, Huikko’s promotes funeral luncheons and celebrations of life on its well-designed website. Additionally, strong relationships with the Catholic church and the local funeral home have made a huge difference.

What packages do they offer for funeral services? It looks like Huikko’s keeps it simple. They offer traditional Minnesota hot dishes in the winter, while sandwich trays and homemade potato salad are popular in the summer. Even simpler, regular buffet meals are offered at a discount, and many families opt for the open bar. Home-made chocolate bars, cakes, and cookie trays are available for dessert. Room rentals are complimentary on weekdays.

Huikko’s is the first to do it, and they’ve got it down to a science, so how do these events play out? “Most luncheons arrive at the event center about 12:45 p.m. and are cleaned up and gone by 4 p.m. Having the luncheons at the event center is a huge bonus for bar revenue. We set up the buffet line, dessert, and beverage station. The funeral home will bring in the flowers and picture boards from the church. Guests will arrive, pray, and go right into lunch and socializing.”

Les continues, “We do also host the service at the event center if the funeral home isn’t large enough or if the family does not have a church they belong to. We have had caskets and urns in the room.”

Les’s success with Huikko’s Bowling Center is a combination of the many things he’s done right. The website is easy to manage. The different dining and catering options are easily accessible online. They offer cosmic bowling, tournaments, mini-golf, and volleyball on the outside property. Most importantly, they’ve gone the extra mile to build a relationship with the community. We know they are not done adapting.

“Planning a funeral isn’t something that anyone wants to go through. Any way that we can help the family, we are here to do so. As I said, we give a complimentary room and discounted meal. We do this as a service to the family. In return, it is bringing in revenue on short notice, during a day that we didn’t have booked. Also, it brings new customers that may not have been to our place before or didn’t know that we existed!

Revenue

Thu, 01 Dec 2022 17:00:00 +0000 Mike Fernandez 217 at https://bowlingindustry.com Adding Axe Throwing to FECs https://bowlingindustry.com/adding-axe-throwing-to-FECs Adding Axe Throwing to FECs Axecitement Tue, 11/01/2022 - 12:00

We are getting more calls recently concerning FEC axe throwing, and for good reason. When you compare start up costs and revenue per square foot, the FEC owners are one of the first to realize what a gold mine the Axe Throwing business can be. An axe lane, turn key construction can be about $6,000 (for a very professional setup) and occupy just 120 square feet of floor space. On average, participants are paying about $25 an hour for throwing, you have 4-6 throwers in a lane, which means a revenue of $100 – $150 per hour, or a dollar per foot per hour!

The other attractive thing about Axe Throwing in a FEC is the cost of running it is simply a $20 axe now and then when they break, and some wood, that with end grain targets run a cost of under a buck an hour of use! Comparing these costs to other attractions at an FEC make the addition of a few axe lanes a no-brainer!

The other huge plus of putting Axe Throwing in a family entertainment center is the fact that it appeals to the parents.
